What Should You Do in the Event of a House Fire?

Ideally, you will never need to know what to do in the event of a house fire, but remembering a few simple steps can save your life if you ever get caught in one.

If you find yourself caught in a house fire, acting quickly is essential. Here are the steps you should take to increase your chances of safety if your house does catch fire.

Extinguish

It isn’t always possible to extinguish a flame, but if it is, that is the first thing you should do. Extinguishing the fire early is essential to prevent further damage and harm to housemates or family members.

Alarm

If the fire cannot be extinguished, raise the alarm to anyone who may not have been notified. If all fire alarms are working, your next priority should be to evacuate the house as soon as possible.

Rescue

If it is safe to do so, rescue anyone in the household that may have difficulty evacuating, such as young children or elderly family members.

Evacuate

Evacuate the building as quickly as possible. If you have a clear route of escape, leave as quickly as possible. If the flame has spread, and the house is filling with smoke, crawl along the floor to avoid inhalation of smoke and toxic fumes. If there is a closed door between you and the closest exit, touch the handle to see if it is hot. If it is, leave it closed as there is likely to be fire directly behind the door. If the handle is cool, carefully open to door to see if any smoke escapes. If you do not see any smoke, enter the door and close it behind you.

Meet

Once you are outside, head directly towards your emergency meeting place. If you have not already, set a landmark to meet the members of your household in the event of a fire. A common meeting place is the front mailbox.

Call 000

As soon as you are in a safe area, call 000 to notify emergency services.

Make sure every other household members have made it to your emergency meeting place and notify emergency services if anyone is missing. Do not enter the house again.

If you are unable to evacuate, find a room that has not caught fire, close the door and place a wet towel under the door to prevent smoke from entering through the gap. Open a window and find a bright-coloured object to wave out the window to signal for help. This is an unlikely circumstance, but is possible if you are above ground level in a multi-story building.
